Sunflower

Helianthus annuus

Oilseed

Overview

Sunflower is a premium oilseed crop grown in both Kharif and Rabi seasons, uniquely adaptable to multiple agro-climates across India. Karnataka is the leading producer. Sunflower oil is prized for its high linoleic acid content and neutral flavour. The crop’s heliotropic habit — young heads tracking the sun — is one of the most recognizable phenomena in agriculture.

Soil Requirements

Soil Type Well-drained loamy to sandy loam
Optimum pH 6.0–7.5
Sunflower performs best in deep, well-drained loamy soils. It is sensitive to waterlogging and highly responsive to balanced fertilization especially boron and potassium. Avoid heavy clay soils that retain excessive moisture.
